We couldn’t have scripted it any better.

So we’re on the last legs of our three month stint in New York. We came for a month, fell in love with the city, and stayed for an extra two. On one of our last nights here we headed to Brooklyn, to the 11th annual Movies With A View at Brooklyn Bridge Park (at Pier 1). It was opening night for this summer and the movie playing was a Woody Allen classic from 1977: Annie Hall.

Neither of us had ever seen a Woody Allen movie. The large lawn was full of trendy, young Brooklynites sitting on blankets, chatting and having picnics. There wasn’t a blade of grass showing by the time the movie started.

Movies with a view indeed

Movies with a view indeed

The huge inflatable screen sat towards the water, so when looking at it you had, well, a movie with a view: boats trundling past, the lights of Manhattan across the river to the right.

New York’s been in a heatwave as of late with temperatures in the mid 30′s (that’s high 90s for you American folk). But tonight it was perfect, the temperature dropping to a comfortable level and a nice cool breeze coming in off the water.

If you haven’t seen Annie Hall, it’s set mainly in New York, with Allen’s character, Alvy Singer, growing up in Brooklyn (in a rattling house under a Coney Island rollercoaster). The theme of the movie is focused on his relationship with Annie Hall (Diane Keaton); their meeting, the courtship, the good and turbulent times, and, eventually, the break up. We laughed from start to finish.

We’re traveling solo

A couple of weeks ago Yvonne and I came to a decision to spend some time apart, so we’re going solo for the next little while. I’m off to Thailand on a press trip until July 20 and when I return to New York I’m heading straight to Halifax, Nova Scotia for some downtime and nature.

Yvonne is going to Montreal where she’s planning on shacking up for a bit and learning some French.

Not only was Annie Hall perfectly fitting for the setting, but also for the relationship talk. We found some of it too familiar; so many parallels to what’s happening in our lives.

But no matter what happens, we’ll always love you New York.
